If you start a Survival game now you'll notice it says "fighter". Apocalypse games are labeled as "survivor" (note: not survival). You can verify this by looking at your saves using the load option, rather than having to die every time. Lemmy said it was for sandbox reasons, or something to that effect, on here a while back.
